Boleros such as Por Mujeres Como Tu (“For Women like You”) and Me Estoy Acostumbrando A Ti (“I’m Getting Used to You”) have made multi-Grammy winner Pepe Aguilar one of the greatest balladeers of all time.
Aguilar recorded those tracks in the late 90’s, paving the way for his first Grammy-winning CD Por Una Mujer Bonita (For a Beautiful Woman) in 2000. The title track and “Perdoname” (“Excuse Me”) saw extensive airplay across the US.
He had already been a staple on Regional Mexican radio but quickly found his way onto mainstream Latin pop stations.
To celebrate my 35th birthday, I thought it would be a good idea to take my parents to see the talented troubadour at the Majestic Theater.
“I hope those tickets weren’t expensive, mijo.” Mom patted the back of my gearshift hand as we headed to San Antonio.
“No, Mom. A buddy of mine snagged us some comp tickets for tonight’s show.”
We arrived at the venue and the first thing she noticed was the long line of fans waiting around the block.
“It’s already crowded. Do you think we’ll find a place to sit?’
“Mom, don’t worry. We have great seats.”
Then my father complained about parking.
“You’re not gonna find a place with all these jackasses here,” he said. “You know I can’t walk very far because of my bad knees.”
I dropped them off and handed them their tickets. “Don’t worry. I’m gonna use valet parking and I’ll meet you inside.”
I made a slight detour to a nearby watering hole for a shot of comfort. However, we did have a nice time after all.
After the show, his booming vocals still rang in my ears. My folks commented about the evening all the way back home. I just smiled and nodded.
Pepe Aguilar returns to the Majestic this fall.
